Take a look at this analysis and see how lame I am  :

Using the Digital Point Keyword suggestion tool
I find a key phrase that has 60 searches per day, or
1800 searchs per month on OVERTURE.

It turns out that for that phrase on Google I am ranked
number 1, and have been for 8 months.
Since on my 400 page web site
I get 800 times more referrals from
Google than Overture, I expect 1.4 million impressions
    per month from Google.

But total visitors to that page in December were 744.

By the way, Overture doesn't have me in the top 40.

pop ups and the like will skew the figures like that. The ONLY way to know google stats is to run a controlled adwords campaign.

Everything else is just guessing, some better than others, but still guessing.

Those 1800 searches are not ON Overture. That figure is gathered from many sources.

There's no way you can justify an assumption of impressions originating from Google based on Overture Inventory figures combined with your past referral ratios.

    AdWords is indeed more accurate.

Fair enough, but using the Word Tracker results
I get within a factor of two. Do you think both
Altavista and WordTracker take their actual
results and multiply them by a factor to try
to scale them for all the combined search engines?

This would be kind of bleccky for Overture, who
is trying to estimate how many clicks you are
likely to pay for. It would explain why it is not
unusual to see an estimate of 17 per day for
a phrase that is so specific that it was probably
    only tried once.
