Expanding Content on One Site

    Hi there,

I have a question about how unrelated content can be on one site to be safe in search engines (primarily care about Google).

So I'll give my issue directly:

I have a site on video games. Focusing on Sony PS3, PSP, Nintendo Wii, DS, and Microsoft Xbox 360, all the latest video game consoles. I'd like to expand out to the older systems like NES, SNES, Game Boy, Sega systems, and to PC games. And just to completely clarify, I'll give two more examples:

    1. I have a site on Playstation 3: playstation3website.com and only on playstation 3 for a few months, but once SERPs improve I decide to make content on ps2, psp, and ps1.

    2. I have a site on "Wii", Nintendo's new console: wiiwebsite.com and only on Wii for a while. Then, again, once SERPs improve I decide to expand to NES (nintendo's first system), SNES (2nd system), Nintendo 64, and specific nintendo characters/game series like Mario, Yoshi, Super Smash, etc.

Is this allowed and safe? And also, what is the limit to how unrelated/related your content needs to be on one specific site?

    Thanks guys :D

Make a site... make sure the pages work... you'll be fine. Stop stressing, it's of no importance at the moment.

Thanks for the reply. I've already made the site and its the first site to be making any money off the internet for me so I don't want to screw it up.

So am I allowed to expand into other keywords like I mentiond in the examples below?

My reasoning for being cautious is, how does Google know I'm still doing related content? Otherwise, if it wasn't a big deal, top websites who are already really popular on the 'net could start putting completely irrelevant content on just to get easy SERPs from those?

the example you've given dont really represent a change in content so they will be fine.

If you have a site about video games and suddenly add pages that review penis enlargment gadgets then this could damage your site in SERPS.

haha thanks for the clear example of what is off-topic. Yeah, just SEO blogs and forums get me paranoid with all their warnings and stuff

So how does Google determine if my content is on topic? What happens if I add a section on computer hardware reviews to my video game site? Is that still relevant enough (I won't be doing this).

If you happen to add non relevant content on your site it is possible that search engines may not be able to categorize your niche and won’t be able to rank you fairly amongst your contemporaries which means you might not do well in searches in your subject area.

Adding non-relevant content and adding new parallel vertical content are 2 different things.

So what do you guys think the limit is and how is it determined?

eukhost's post kind of made sense, but Voasi countered it and now I'm confused :p .

But in eukhost's post, you just said I might not get ranked well if SE's can't determine content properly, not penalized. All my content does make sense, I'm just saying what happens if the SE's can't recognize that my content is still related.

eukhost's post has no merit. You can be completely off topic and have great rankings. Having great rankings depends on domain age, link age and unique content. Having those 3 factors is what's going to give you great rankings...generally. Example of this is all over the Net when you see a powerful old site create pages that aren't related to their site and they'll rank EXTREMELY well. Sometimes they do it for spam. Sometimes they don't know they do it. Sometimes people pay them a lot of money to make the pages (because it works).

So if your site plateaued in your content, then go ahead and start writing about a new related vertical.

Hi you are saying that you are looking for linked pages for your site. I suggest you that you may pl be try to insert the linked pages only and not waste your time for insert image and other. Your site gets upgrade.

I am not too sure about the merit of your post. As you mentioned, examples of this can be found all over the Net. Can you provide me a few links of sites which have added content which isn't related to their site's theme and they still rank extremely well?

You're content is in all cases video games related so you're technicaly on-topic in each of these scenarios. Just add content, and Google would love your site ;) . BTW: Don't worry about the SEs untill you have had some worth while content. My 2 cents..

You can always expand your site with new pages and content but remember that you must not change the content for which you have got ranked.
Infact search engines love the content that a site has to offer provided you have employed right kind of navigation techniques and other seo techniques.
Like if you have playstation3website.com and you provide good informative links for ps2, ps1 there is no harm the fact is that your ranking for ps3 will be better then ps2.But i repeat again provided u have done good SEO.

Ok, here's an example. Let's go after a competitive search term: Mortgage Loans

    Page 2: Monster.com - http://www.google.com/search?q=mortgage+loans&hl=en&lr=&rls=GGGL,GGGL:2006-23,GGGL:en&start=10&sa=N

Loans have nothing to do with job hunting, looking for a job, or job search, which are their main keywords and market.

There are others, but I'll let you do your own searching for them.

We are experimenting with key word optimiyations and covering all the features our forum offers webmasters. Problm is that is you use too many keywords you atart to delute the effectiveness so you want to target the really important ones forst and than expnd. We are also playing with subdomain optmiyations, will post results.
