Excuses to install/start an e-commerce site

I want to setup an online store so that I can familiarize myself with setting up shopping cart software. However I don't have anything to sell and don't really want to be stuck with a drop-ship business when I'm done. I also would like to avoid the monthly fees of a merchant account and some drop-ship wholesalers. Any suggestions as to what to do with a $6,000 web site I plan to not want?

Most of the commonly used ecommerce cms have versions that you can use for free - they're either opensource like oscomerce - or you can demo for free for a specified period of time, or use for free with their branding on them

I was planning to use zen cart. I wasn't so much concerned with what software to use, as much as what to put in and what to do with it when I'm done. I don't think an online store is worth much if I don't promote it, and I'm not sure I want to run one if I make less than $200 a month on it. So what do I put in it, what do I do when I'm done with the site?
