Hi there. I've been reading up about buying and selling domains recently, and it got me interested. Now I understand the process of buying from a registrar, that is fairly simple, but what is the exact process of buying from another person? Any advice or links to an explanation would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

There are several ways to buy domains from individuals.

    1. It can be on a sales thread like this: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/forumdisplay.php?f=59
    2. You stumble across a domain that interests you and you make an offer.

Once a pricing agreement has been made then the seller will push the domain into your account. There is different requirements for each registrar. For example someone pushing a name into your GoDaddy account will need your account name or number and the email address associated with that account. Someone pushing a name into your Moniker registrar will need your account number and authorization number.

Just be careful at this point in your domaining career that you take your time evaluating purchases and proceed slowly.

If you need further information on this subject I will expand on my answer.

I usually use Paypal but I know almost everyone I buy off of and sell to. Paypal can be dangerous because of possible scams associated with payment reversals. An escrow service is recommended for higher dollar transactions.

If you are using an auction house then generally payment and transfer are facilitated through the auction house.

BTW, there are no stupid questions in this industry. Reading, doing and asking are the only ways to learn

Thank you very much for your help, one last thing, is the paypal service integrated with the domain exchange on sites such as godaddy or does it need to be done separately?

I'm not sure exactly. If you are purchasing a name through any GoDaddy marketplace then you will process through GoDaddy checkout where you can use your Paypal

You can also buy via Sedo. You pay to them, buyer pushes or transfers domain to them, they pay buyer and push or transfer domain to you
