You know why SUN MICRO made this a FREE software to compete with Microsoft? They wanted to drive down Microsoft sales and revenues IMHO. They executed an open source community. Its a great product but few people know about it.

All of you guys think about the windows users. I am now using windows, i'm using ubuntu 10.04 and Open Office is the best. Also used on windows is the best, because it's cheaper (free) than Microsoft Office 2003-2010.

I tried it a while back but for word processing it did a terrible job with grammar correction. At least about a year or so ago. Maybe they improved that since then. Other than that for free it does a good job.

With OpenOffice.org 3.2.0 RC5.org without any problems, you can open most documents of MS Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), edit them and save as in the standard format of OpenOffice.org 3.2.0 RC5, and in their original format. OpenOffice.org 3.2.0 RC5 is in continuous development and its capabilities are constantly evolving. Unlike MS Office OpenOffice.org 3.2.0 RC5 works very well both on Windows, and on Linux. There is a perfect form of support OASIS OpenDocument, export data in PDF format embedded tools for working with databases and others.

I have Office 2003, but haven't updated to 2007 or 2010 because it's very expensive to do so.

What I find is that most people don't use 80% of all what's possible with MS Office, so Open Office will be adequate for most people.

OpenOffice is great, but I still prefer MS Office as it is the standard. Even if OO had/has all the same features.

Google Docs might be the biggest competitor of MS Office. Google Docs might be the best online office suite.

I feel like I just opened a timewarp thread from 10 years ago! People who have heard about Open Office but never used it? Really?

I much prefer Open Office over Microsoft Office, although there are some compatibility reasons why I do sometimes revert to Microsoft Office.

For anyone 'on the fence', go ahead. Download and install Open Office. It is a more than competent mutli-platform Office suite which will serve all your names. If there's anything you do regularly, which you can't do with Open Office, then by all means upgrade. Otherwise, support the Open Source movement.
