Example on How to build the ULTIMATE directory!!

As you may know its really important to concentrate and build directories with other services attached to it.

here is a very good sample of what we are talking about:

    http://www.equineonline.net/index.php

You'll make more money through several services than just using a turnkey directory. Take a moment to really digest and see what these people are doing service wise. Also note its a niche not a standard/general directory. This is what its all about!!!

What are your thoughts after you look at it?
    :)

Not a pretty site, too cluttered, but I like how they have everything you could want.

I don't see a directory, it is a classified ads site.

Irrespective of the look (which is okay 5/10) yes its got many revenue streams and services

Look in lower left. BTW classified ads are just an EXTENSION of a traditional directory - its categorized into categories and subcategories.

Those are categories of the classifieds.

Classifieds are for ads, that expire
web directory, a collection of web sites with description, additional info,...

It is a directory of products, not websites, so? It is still a directory, just because it isn't for "PR link juice" doesn't make it not a directory

    fair enough,
but I still call this classifieds not a web directory.

And if that site is a directory, what's special in it? categories, subcats, listings,.. and?

It isn't the directory or the classifieds that make it special, it its that it is a portal, it contains everything you need on horse racing in one site.

They are using a classified ads script to put this together but it doesn't mean they are all classified ads. Granted the implementation could be better but the logic and approach is there. here is a sample listing with "description, additional info"

    http://www.equineonline.net/equestrianclassifieds/index.php?a=5&b=280

Listing your site in a directory is a way of advertising so you could technically consider it an ad. Depending on how the admin has configured his directory, there may be a yearly cost which technically means they expire.

Oh BTW a web directory doesn't have to just be a "collection of websites with description, additional info" - thats the whole issue I'm addressing. The the biggest directory out there list companies that do and don't have websites, why should you just limit yourself to those that have sites only? If you don't know which directory i'm talking about I'll tell you, you may have actually heard of it: www.yellowpages.com

well, i would probably get repped around for poking my neck here,
but any idea which script this guy is using,

this is precisly what id been planning in my head for the past 2 days,

if u see successful directories which have no been pen.... by Mr. G., they...

    =========
Oh BTW, all listings of all directories are back, only for their domains though!
    ============

all have this, V7N, has forums, a script repostory, .... ... i mean the directory is an addon to the main site! .... the directory gets user traffic coz of the main site! .... not just "links"

i would say "Cluttered" => definately!
but the idea rocks,.... have been searching for a good free classifieds script!
    any pointers?

Well I'm flattered to find my site, Equine Online, is being discussed on here :). It has good and bad points as has been pointed out. Re being cluttered, I agree that it may look better with a simpler layout but as with most portal sites, there is a lot of stuff on it and people need to know it's there. Same goes for the nav but I want anyone to be able to get anywhere on the site in max two clicks. Anyway I thought I would join in as I am always looking for ways to improve the site to will be reviewing any feedback on here with interest.

BTW I'm totally self taught and do all the web design, graphics and SEO myself. I get occasional help with php stuff but otherwise its all my own work so I'm quite proud of what I've achieved so far.

I'm a tough cookie so do your worst. I can take it ;).

P.S. If there as anything that I am doing right, feel free to ask me questions. If I can help I will.

Nicely done goatie. I think its cluttered but its ok. And IMo it serves both purpose and will do well.
This is cluttered, not well arranged and listed on my site but its sure damn full of info. http://www.allamericanhotdog.com/ and btw I did not know its really A Good Site until I searched for it.

There might be a well designed and prestigious designed site but its nothing at all unless....

Anyway very nice there mate and always looking for something creative from you always.

The classified software I have used is below:

    http://www.geodesicsolutions.com/classifiedssoftware/classifieds_ads_software_enterprise.htm

It is not free but after spending many weeks trialing various software, I think it is the best and worth every penny. Once you have purchsed it you can have any php programmer do mods if you require it.
