Google says this "Negative keywords are a core component of a successful keyword list. Adding a negative keyword to your ad group or campaign means that your ads won't show for searches containing that term. By filtering out unwanted impressions, negative keywords can help you reach the most appropriate prospects, reduce your cost-per-click (CPC), and increase your ROI. "

For example, I used to have a dating campaign with the Broad matched keyword 'singles'

AdWords triggered my ads for search terms like 'lady gaga songs'.
Why? because "songs" is a synonym for "singles", in the eyes of Google.
Then I added the Negative-Phrase matched keywords: "songs", "song"

You can avoid triggering synonyms by avoiding regular broad match, i.e. using only Modified Broad ('+keyword' instead of 'keyword'), Phrase and Exact matches.

Another example: using brands as negative keywords, since the user looking for a specific brand might be less likely to convert on a website which is unrelated to that brand. Like: "comcast cable tv packages" vs "cable tv packages".

Smart negative keyword selection can contribute significantly to your campaign optimization.

If you are selling something, a good example of negative keyword would be "free". If you sell beer, you will be interested in people looking for "beer", but you're probably not interested in advertising to people looking for "free beer".

So, "free" would be a negative (excluding) keyword in this case.

    beer
    -free
