is the keyword mentioned in the title tags? meta description tags? do you have the keyword within you content? finally and most importantly, are you getting links back to your site with the keyword in a contextual link?

Getting rankings will mostly come down to getting quality backlinks with that phrase as your link anchor text. You basically need a better link profile than the websites already ranking for that phrase. You do not automatically rank well for a keyword just because it is in your domain. You have to prove that you are relevant in other ways.

Type in "miserable failure" in Yahoo, and you will see the biography of former President Bush ranked first place. That is the power of anchor text links. There are so many anchor text links that say "miserable failure" directing to George W. Bush that it made it number one. You need to work on your keywords.

I absolutely agree...If the keyword is highly competitive, then just having the same in your domain name would not be enough to give you good serps.

You probably need to put in lot more effort to beat the competition.
