If you're designing a website, the general advice is to not cause links to open in a new window. The thinking there is that your visitors know that they just have to click the back button and they get back to your site. However, I kind of disagree on many levels. There are also now pop up blockers, which might stop new windows being spawned... for some. I always set all my links on my website to open in a new window. Does anybody have a study/results of some research into what really IS best for keeping your traffic on your site (perchance to increase your own clicks on adverts)? One way or the other ... what is PROVEN to be best from a marketing/traffic retention perspective ...? Thanks.
From my experience, I always open in same window. My proof is that I have pop ups blocked and most people do.
When I click on something and a pop up blocker stops it, I just click OK to allow it. Maybe I should just set them all to not open in a new window ... tricky one.
