Can anyone recommend a site that uses articles well, so that I can get a picture of what that looks like? If I can see what is considered a good use of articles I can figure out how they would work on my site.
Go to ezinearticles and you will find plenty of website using articles for marketing, however it takes time and effort to do article marketing, and you should keep on working.
The notion of spending time, money and energy to grow someone else's site makes no sense to me. If you’re going to write an article, why not for your own site? Why use it to drive more traffic to some article directory?

The article can be picked up by a high traffic site, sending you a flood of traffic. Articles are an important way to promote, and increase the rank of your own sites. You are creating numerous links from high PR sites. I understand people wishing to use the same articles on the directories and their website, but personally I think it is a wrong tactic. You want to use articles to draw people to your site, and then give them additional reasons to stay, and continue to come back, or to take an action. (Action equals either buy, or sign up.) If you are going to reuse content, reuse it everywhere but your main money site. It should be filled with your premier and exclusive content.
Also, it's sometimes easier to get an article ranked really well on the search engines if you're using a high PR directory like Ezine. They already have millions of backlinks going to them and Google likes it a lot.

Before you start article marketing you have to sit down and know what your plan is. Are you writing the articles for people or SEO purposes? Here's a little article marketing tactic that will work. 1) Write an article put it on your site first. 2) Change it about 30% submit it to ezinearticles 3) Change it another 30%. Wait until it is accepted and published at ezine articles. Then submit it to the other 4 top tier article directories 4) Write another article with the same keywords 5) submit the hell out of this one to as many 2nd tier, on down, article directories as you can. well for one i would say ezinearticles is a site that uses articles really well in fact. that is why they are able to rank that high. though it is an authority site you can still copy their techniques.
