    Hey everyone,

I think its safe to say that the majority of online businesses are using email marketing, if not then they should be! I also see the topic of email marketing popping up here quite often.

I have come across in my eyes an essential MUST for becoming a successful email marketer, or at the least maximizing profits!

Everyone tells you to build an email list, but its not as easy as people make it out. It's not just a case of set up squeeze page/opt in form, drive traffic, promote affiliate products and make money.

It's much more in depth as I'm sure you will know.

I'm going to already assume you know the basics.

In my opinion every email marketer should be doing this, but truth is they are not! What is it?

    LIST SEGMENTATION

Now, many email marketers choose to build one gigantic email list, which is great and will still bring money in BUT they are missing out on a lot more profit!

What I do is segment my lists into smaller lists. Why?

Well, going back to when I first started list building I set up my squeeze page with a free giveaway of a eBook which was how to drive traffic to your websites.

I built another list giving away another free eBook which was how to market your business on Google Plus.

I have another list which I built using video training and eBook on Forex Trading.

I can keep going, I have a few more email lists but we will stick with these 3 for an example.

Now an email marketer with one huge list may have built their list using the exact same giveaways as me. They have a list consisting of people interested in online traffic, social media (G+) and Forex. 7

Each time they promote an affiliate offer to their list they are not catering for everyone. Would someone interested in Forex want to learn how to market a business on G+?

They also are limited to how many emails they can send per day. If they send too many then they are going to lose subscribers fast!

Whereas I can send multiple emails per day. In this example I could send 3 emails, one to each of my lists. I could find an affiliate product relating to online traffic and send that to my traffic list. I could find a social media product or G+ and send that to my G+ list and I could find a Forex product and send that to my Forex list.

I also go one step further.

If a subscriber buys a product I then segment them into a new list just for buyers. Its amazing just how powerful autoresponders are!

I cant speak for them all as I only use Aweber, which allows you to segment with ease!

I published a blog post recently which goes into it a little more detail and uses different examples to help you understand.

    Hi Thomas,

Thanks for sharing this great post.
I agree with you, segmenting our lists is a great idea as it helps us to be more specific to our email subscribers needs.
It is a great idea to have our buyers go on a separate list, since these people have already bought from us, they are more likely to buy again in the future since they know, like and trust us more so than the people who have not bought anything yet.
