Well I would but then I'd have to compete with DP. ;).

I have been thinking about it for a long time, since there's always room for improvement.

However, I always get discouraged by the amount of spam going around.

    Spam is stoppable though

and yeah, theres room for improvement, but theres also room for "more", at the rate the seo, and search engine, internet based discussions and practices are growing so rapidly

    pm me ;)

There's always room for more/better... Digital Point was started WAY after all the big forums were established for years (webmasterworld, SEO Chat [at the time was big], SitePoint, etc.)

So yeah... if done right, you can not only be successful, you can overtake the others (including this one). You just have to do it better is all.

I've thought about it, but then decided since there are already many good one's there is not need trying to re-invent the wheel. Best of luck if you try it though.

hey digitalpoint, thanks for your coming in on this thread, must be a pretty famous guy these days? ;)

mdvaldosta, yeah i see what you mean, i certainly dont think of it as trying to re-invent the wheel, as i have started forums before on a popular base, where there was lots of forums for that category, but it worked

You'll need (or it'll be convenient to have) a site with an existing userbase to spring the forum onto them. You won't be too successful if you just start an empty forum and hope people will join (although if you have a few influential people promoting it for you, you may work out well). Webmaster tools etc. are always handy.

I notice a lot of people here with competing webmaster forums. I've never personally been tempted to start one, even though it's a topic that interests me. The trouble is, it's something that all web builders have some interest in, so the competition is unusually high for what is really quite a niche audience.

I don't know the story behind all the other successful forums, but Shawn said on an earlier post that he didn't start DP from scratch, it had a lot of traffic already for the webmaster tools. So I imagine you need something special to offer before you get to that critical mass of users that allows the site to take off.

i agree, it does help, but its certainly "do-able" from scratch

i started a new forum about 2 and a half months ago, had a base of about 10 members for a long time, now theres 3,000 members, this was also a "niche" where theres a tonne of forums competing, so i can sure make it work :p
