Ever talked to someone who has no understanding of online business?

I was talking to my sister yesterday about how I make money online and it felt like I was talking to a wall. When I was done she kept asking questions, question like, "Is what you're doing illegal?"

It was so frustrating. When we were done I felt stupid, she was literally ripping apart my brain. Lesson learned though, don't talk to anyone about online business if they don't understand the internet.

Anyone else gone through similar experiences?

Sadly so.. Nearly everyone in my family, and everyone I know is nearly completely computer illiterate.
What I do for 16+ hours a day is just 'my thing'... they don't ask questions.

I feel your pain man, when I talk to my friends about my work they just stare at me. Then they talk about flipping burgers and stocking shelves, that normally cheers me up.

It's almost impossible to explain to some folks. I have reduced it to "I work with computers" and don't elaborate.

Of course they tell me how much they know about computers then, but it's a safer conversation.

I need to learn to be more like you. I always fall into the conversation and I always get burned, it's so annoying.

Well, I had a local computer service business before and slowly came over to the internet and stopped running around on the streets and crawling under desks. So, I'm the computer man to many local folks and my family already.

I have tried to explain that I'm not in hardware anymore and do programming, advertising, publishing and stuff on the internet, but we've already established where that went.

    Haha, oh yeah.
Yet sometimes its nice to have someone to talk to.. Try to get someone to understand you.
I am most definetly a loner, and really only have one person to whom I can talk about internet -stuff.. And that'd be my girlfriend (who coincidentally works repairing computers).

Manage countless websites, businesses, etc. Just a work-intesive job.

my mom, up till now, never really understands what i'm doing. she just thinks it's "make enough money to buy a beer", and she doesn't ask more. so now i'm on my way to proving to her that soon, EYE will pay for my own college tuition. :D

um... i spelled it that way to emphasize 'I'. normally you capitalize the word you want to emphasize, LIKE THIS. capitalizing the I is redundant and doesn't tell people you are emphasizing it. so in this case, I'm saying that I will pay for tuition, not mom and dad (anymore). :)

anyway my mom once asked me, "you keep saying HTML. what is HTML? How To Make Love?" =/

There's definitely a "it's not real work" mentality with a lot of people (both with my online work and my writing - I lose on both accounts). When my mother visits, no matter how much money I'm making, she still brings job ads to tell me to get a "real job" that's stable. lol She doesn't understand PR, the Internet, how people can make money writing, etc. I just ignore it until she goes home. ;) I have a few friends in similar lines of work online though, so we just talk to each other about work, and laugh about our respective friends and families not "getting it" when issues like that come up. It helps. :)

You could have italicized it like you're supposed to do when emphasizing something. ;)

Now that's just adorably funny. :)

Haha, that's funny. Dissed by your own Mom, that has to hurt.

And yeah, I get you. I was just surprised at the possibility that someone may have forgotten how to spell I. :p

haha, you even quote the correct way to emphasize something and you use capitals again...

Yes, the majority of the people I am around dont understand the whole webmaster/making money 'scene' I call it a scene because I think in someways its kind of trendy, but thats a whole different topic.

I had an appointment with a SCORE counselor a few days ago, the counselor was 73 years old, and didn't understand e-business at all, so I spent the majority of my time was spent trying to explain the concept and how my project I was in to speak about would make money. I dont think even by the end of the session he understood what I was talking about.

Cool thread...my family always laughs at me whenever they see me sitting here in front of my pc working with those codes, giving a smile at some forum posts...but who cares, I'm earning a lot from here. :)
