This has been a big issue the past few years (in English football especially) - it's hard to call a team 'English' when they only have 1 English player (Arsenal). This is especially true when playing against European opposition. The game is losing the national identity through foreign players, soon it will get to the point where an English team plays a French team and the English team has more French players. So the FA have proposed imposing a limit on 5 foreign players and 6 homegrown players for European matches. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/europe/7421348.stm Personally, I think that the English game needs this, every year we have less and less English players. It's getting a lot worse, we have plenty of quality English players but no real quantity... it's about getting the balance right and it's swaying too far in favour of quality right now which also impacts immensely on our national side. What do you think?
Well I think is good steps. We can see Mancheste United, Liverpool and Spurs have English players but when we see Arsenal we only find Theo Walcott.
no matter what rule they set up, the European Union rules will apply at the end. they can't do anything about it. what they could do is what id done in Russia and Israel in basketball ; you can have as many foreigners as you want, but at each moment of the game (in local competition) you must have at least 2 out of 5 players that have the country's nationality (russia/israel). in continental competitions they may align whoever they want, as other countries do not have such rules. i beleive this to be the fairest solution as all teams on the local scene have the same limitations, but once they play international games, they do it like everybody else.
