Having a look on Sedo, it's clear the winners of the day were the select few able to access the registration servers.

rhineriver.eu sounds a really good name. The amount of boats that go up and down it is unbelievable. I spent 5 years living in Cologne, I'm sure that I have a few pics of the river if you need some let me know.
The only one of my failed regs that i really wanted was handy.eu (handy is what many european countries call mobile/cell phones) eg Handy.be

I did register carautoloans.eu I kind of like the name but has a word too many, still I spent hours just to get that name. I'll develop it and see what happens, it will be interesting to see how .eu's compare to .co.uk, .de, .com .net etc with a content site.
Trying to decide what country to host in, probably go for england or Germany.

Art.eu is up, but I think that was taken during sunrise period.
    Just redirects to art.com.
Now is that a good reason to give it to them, just because they have the dot com?

Personally after looking at the site I'd say no. how can anyone have a right to a term like art?
Or to that matter apple? Apple computers ok, apple records fine, but to me an orchard owner could make great use of appl e.eu
Anyone any idea who got it, are they going to go to court over that too?

In answer to my own question apple.eu belongs to Apple Computer limited.
I bet that will make Yoko Ono pissed off ;)

I have written about the guys behind art.eu in an article on the whole .eu domain name debacle. Had other critical jobs to do today, but felt compelled to write that piece so that people could see what a shambles the whole process was. I'm sorry that all the great people at DP didn't manage to acquire the domain names they wanted but, with all the fraud that place, you'll understand why :(

Great article. It really does sum up how the domain registration fiasco was manipulated to death.

I applied for 2 completely unrelated domains through a very well known registrar in Germany, both were available. I entered my details and everything looked fine. Within a couple of hours i had access to change the nameservers so i really thought i must now be the owner.

Today i log into my account and there is no access to those domains, so i check the whois and both domains are now registered to the same person at the same address in Germany. They were registered 7 hours AFTER i had applied for them.

Looks like to me some little punk working for the registrar is taking names he hadn't thought of that are coming through from customers and keeping them for himself. That's way way to much of a coincidence to be anything else.

    Man, that sucks!

Watching the number of registered domains by country as the day progressed, there seemed to me to be a disproportionate number of registrations via Germany. At one point in the day there was something like 35% German registrations v's 18% UK registrations.

In my opinion the whole rollout of the .eu extension has been manipulated by a very few at the expense of the many, and possibly the success of the extension itself. It's all very well having a million domains registered but for your average person trying to get an .eu extension for a name they want is going to find that it has already been bought and is now up for sale at some exhorbitant price.

It's like a million domains are about to end up on Sedo.

    Frauds.biz Deletes On: 4/11/2006

Fraud.eu might also become the most popular .eu, someone's application is still pending.
Fraud.eu would be the most suitable domain to write about this whole sorry debacle.

I have sent your link to the BBC as feedback on their .eu article, it will be interesting to see if anyone takes a look at it (not holding my breath).

I'm sorry that you guys didn't get the domains you were looking for. I only read about this today and thought I'd take a look. Of the 20 domains I wanted, 18 were available.

I registered them all between 2pm and 3pm GMT. By 5pm GMT, all eighteen were showing in my euroDNS account.

Looks like I was REAL lucky :)

You should be fine to register most things that show as being available when you search now. I registered two names after the landrush, got them both no problems.
