Etiquette for link exchanging?

After doing link exchanging for 5 years, I would like to know what other link exchangers use for the "rule of thumb" for link exchanging.

My favorite people to deal with are people that reciprocate in equal value and in a timely manner.

Many times I do a link exchange with people that place my link on a page that has 200 links on it and carries no value. This is done after I have given a good quality link and the person has up and left.

Other times, I find myself having to check back on people to make sure they return the link exchange as I am the one that usually initiates and places their link within a couple of hours and on a page that I know will be advantagous to the other persons site.

Sometimes I wait days for it to be reciprocated if they even do it at all after I have given them a good link.

I wish at the top of this forum would be a post "Link exchanging Etiquette" that gives guidelines as to how to link exchange fairly and honestly.

If I can start it out, my standards on how I like to exchange are....

-Provide a link within 24 hours of an agreement taking place.
-Confirm with the other party the content and the page it is to be placed on.
-Use a general guideline as to the quality of a page that it is being placed upon. Eg: If the new person has a site that has no PR and is just getting started, how about a 2 for 1 link exchange.
-A promise to not remove the link in the future.

You notice this problem too. Sad to say it does happen. What's worse is when the person ignores your PMs or email messages inquiring about why the link was removed.

In a perfect world your guide would be useful. It would be nice if everyone played by the same rules. But you will always have those that have no class or respect for others.

I wonder if people who remove links actually are doing any good?.. Sooner or later a recip will also get removed and that is right after all the "link purchase filters" are no more filtering... Respect your old link partners! and you will get respect from major SEs.
