i am just getting more involved with the content network but it seems i can't manage it right. i have too few impressions in an industry where there are 1000s of sites with adsense ads. i started 5 campaigns in the last weeks, i tested many combinations, i tried to rise my bids and nothing, the same low amount of impressions, so for sure google doesn't understand my ad groups themes. i read all about this subject but here are my questions i didn't find answers: 1) google says: "Then, by looking at all the keywords and ad text in your ad groups, our system matches the most relevant ads to the theme of that page". (http://adwords.blogspot.com/2007/11/google-content-network-tips-part-2.html). how much weight do you think google puts on the ad text in establishing the ad group theme? e.g: you have a theme - dating, your ad text is something like this: title: meet singles online, ad text: browse 1000s of profiles and find your mate... no "dating" here. google knows that "singles" is synonim with "dating" but is this ad a good text in establishing a theme? do you put the root keyword ("dating") in the ad title, but in the ad copy, but in both? do you see diferences regarding the impression nummbers when you have your root keyword in your ad title/copy? 2) google says: "Advertisers have found most success on the content network with ad groups of around 15 to 30 keywords". (http://adwords.blogspot.com/2007/12/google-content-network-tips-part-3.html) many ppc bloggers/experts say you could have less keywords, but there is a minimum number of keywords you must put in an ad group? from your experience can google define a theme for an ad group with only 4 keywords or 5, or 6? do you have ad groups with only few keywords and have 1000s of impressions? 3) is the "keyword grouper" from the adwords editor a good start to group your keywords (establish a theme) when dealing with the content network? please feel free to answer any of the above. thank you for your time
I am in the same exact industry, and it's one of the most challenging. I think the problem you are having is theming, which is something I had a hard time understanding at first as well. You want to target dating and singles, but you have to understand the millions of article talking about dating and singles, might not actually be talking about dating. Lets assume an article is talking about finding the right shoes for dating, or shoes that singles love to wear out. The problem is that you want to show up on this article but the problem is that you wont because google has mapped the article more towards shopping and shoes rather than dating. Content requires that you think outside the box, not inside. Try create themes related to dating, but not specifically saying dating in it. Create a shoes campaign, clothes campaign, restaurants, etc... In direct response to your questions 1) Yes the text ad is also used to determine the theme. When creating a text ad stop trying to sell. I see your trying to sell the idea of dating. Remember they are not reading the article to read your ad so you need to be outrageous and stand out. your ad above basically said blah... blah... blah... How about something more like, its off beat and creates interest Are You Still Single? 1,000s are looking for you But can they find you 2) yes, 15 - 30 keywords work well, sometimes I use more like 30 - 50. But remember, Google will only look at the 1st 50 keywords in your adgroup, all the rest are excluded. I have found the groups of 5 - 10 keywords drive a lot of irrelevant clicks 3) No I would not use that tool for content Hope this info helps
hi robert, thanks for your answer, now i have the right path to follow. maybe "theming" will be one of your following blog post, it should be covered in depth, no one did this till now. dating it wasn't just an example, it actually was one of my campaign but what is funny is that "Are You Still Single?" is one of my real ad title, the above was just an example. thanks again
haha... no problem... actually I will be starting a series in the near future on content marketing. It simply seems nobody understands it. Let me know how things work out
