Hi all I've been following this tutorial and got stuck right at the very last stage! The last point (9) says the following Open your browser and navigate to http://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php , follow the instructions, and voila, you are done. Trouble is I get a 404 error when I got to this page so no instructions to follow! I am completely new to this but I was doing ok up to now... I have noticed that on my XAMPP control panel it does have *WARNING: Directory Mismatch* before the status check. After that though it shows both Apache and MySql are running. Could it be something to do with this or perhaps the changes I made to the config.php file - (in the tutorial point 8) I assumed that these were the only changes to make and leave everything else in the file? Thanks in anticipation
Did you use the installer for XAMPP or just extract the files anywhere on your system? You might want to delete XAMPP and install again using the installer if you didn't do so. Also, is the install directory blank? Perhaps find the config file for xampp and manually correct/insert it.
Hi krt I installed it at the root of my C drive as instructed in the tutorial. I'm not quite sure about the install directory being blank - I don't really know what you mean. Also I don't understand what you mean in the last sentence - about manually inserting the config file for xampp. The only config file I had to change was the wordpress one. Sorry - as I said - complete beginner following that tutorial!
XAMPP should have its config file anywhere. And I suppose the install directory should show along with the mismatch error message. Anyway, delete the c:\xampp folder, reinstall XAMPP using the installer, not the EXE, then go from step 3 again. If you want, you can backup your c:\xampp\mysql\data\wordpress\ folder and c:\xampp\htdocs\wordpress\ folder and copy them back into the same locations after re-installing XAMPP.
Hi again Hurrah - problem solved! I did as you suggested and used the installer. I think I also made a mistake when saving one of the files in wordpress to txt rather than php. Anyway - thanks again - I'm sure I'll have more questions at some point but for the time being I'm off to teach myself more about designing themes
