No. How can it be? I think your father is in a misconception about SEO. Until and unless people stop using internet SEO will always be there for people craving to be one the number one position.
As long as humans exist, the internet exists and there are more than a handful of sites vying for customers, SEO will continue to flourish
Most customers that my team have faced kind of presented the same dilemma. People that have no ideea about search engine optimization or search engine marketing think that these processes are a project based "insert money output work" style of job that can be ignored and paid with next to no respect, while looking to obtain #1 for competitive keywords in a few days. SEO and/or SEM are ongoing processes that need careful maintenance and pushing at every day of the month in order to obtain impressive results. It is exactly like with the real marketing of a product from a street-based shop: stop the advertising and sales will surely drop.
If google closed then the other search engines will become the first search engine. As simple as that. If you want to search for something (example you want to know how to make an orange juice) you will run into search engine. Everyone will always need search engine and SEO will never dead. It will keep evolving...SEO will always follow search engine evolution...

Most of the "new techniques" are just shady grey areas that border on the stupid. Chasing after the next "SEO trick" is about as respectable as a lawyer chasing after ambulances if you ask me. Stick to the fundamentals and play the long game - you'll do better because you'll be attaining long-term sustainable growth, which is what every respectable businessman's best interest is, not making a quick buck chasing after every flash-in-the-pan technique or trick because all that's going to do is waste his (or her) valuable (and precious) time.
I think of you want SEO to end you will hvae to restructure the web and redefine how people search for information. Search engines have the limitation of only being able to display so many results per page. If you people continue to use search engines to search for information, then SEO will continue to live because a search engine will always have to decide which pages to display in the top results and the only way to do that without human intervention is by algorithms.
