Maybe for some others too. Verse 4: "Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world."
The king james bible was written by King James....not god..or jesus..or any desciples, but by king james, hence the name KING JAMES VERSION.
All he did was change the flow and sound of the words to a more elegant, readable form. When I read it, it feels more poetic then other versions, and if there's something I don't understand, just look it up.
incorrect...KJV was a version commissioned by KJ, not written by him. It is still a translation of the original greek and hebrew.
That's false, actually. James authorized the translation from the "Received" or "Official" version of the greek texts, the original hebrew and the septuagint. As the king had his hand in this way on everything printed and distributed in England, it isn't really earth-shattering that he would have authorized the production and promulgation of this form of the Bible. Now, one cannot be naive and presume the KJV was devoid of politicking - in particular, the preeminence of the "Divine Right of Kings," the importance of civil "obedience," (and outright extirpation of references to civil "disobedience") and the moral and civil right of state churches, such as the Church of England was, and is, were obviously pointed up with language and structural emphases. The KJV is now considered one of the worst translations as it is marred with errors... On page 1 of my copy of the revisied standard version bible it says the following:
they all have errors...nothing translates word for word, hence the reason there are so many versions...I could easily find errors in every translation, but I prefer to go to the Hebrew and Greek.
Exactly, you should have an understanding of the original translation, or a good cross-reference handy. I only read it for the poetry.
If you want to read mind shattering poetry, read the Quran. If you don't like us Muslims or Islam or whatever, try and read it as a book and not as a religious book, you will be blown away by the beauty of it and the poetry. Many many professors of litrature have called the literacy in the Quran a "miracle beyond imagination". Not trying to hijack the thread, just a suggestion. peace.
I believe you, but poetry has a hypnotic quality to it, and I prefer to make sure what it's about first before I subject my subconscious to it. It's not like I "don't like us Muslims or Islam or whatever", It's just false in my mind. I won't ask you to read the Bible though.
Me too. Don't you worry, you can read it like a story, but either way it is a magnificient piece of poetry, religious or not everyone should read it!
There is no one perfect bible, but you still get a very good basis as to the way you should live your life and have a good idea of what is required to make it to heaven.
Do you mean the actual physical act, or the metaphorical act of spiritual baptism that occurs when we are saved? The reason I ask is because Jesus told the thief on the cross that he would be with him in paradise that day, and he was not baptized by water.
