I am a newbie and wasn't sure exactly waht to SEARCh for in the forums to get an answer

    1) How do you choose which keywords to target
    2) Once you know which keywords you want ,how do you actually "target" the keywords.

i'll answer to your second question...

simply by building your site or part of your site around that keyword or what is associated with it.

if you wanna target the keyword "scubadiving" you don't build a site about skydiving.

    Thanks for the reply.
So do you add lots of the same keyword?
Would I put the word scubadiving everywhere as part of the site or just create a site and add it in the meta ?

These days, meta tags don't have much influence on ranking (but should be used for completeness, I guess).

Yes, you need to incorporate the keywords you are targeting into the content of your website (<title>, <h1>'s etc), but not so much that it looks spammy. Try and get links to your pages with your keywords in the anchoe text, too.

Anchor text. Anchor text is just whatever the text used to link to the site is. Look at all the green links around here. For example, in my signature, there is a link that says "political discussion." The anchor text there is political discussion.

    Hi Bhuwan!
What you need to do is buid ur site around semantic keywords. Semantic Keywords mean u don't have one word stuffed in ur site but synomys of that word are also fitted in the site.

To choose the keywords to target you need to know the theme of ur site. Keywords are a way to attarct traffic to your site. U need to choose keywords for ur site which are based on the theme of the site and are synomys of each other.

Choosing keywords - either go to Wordtracker which is a paid service, or use the free tool at SEO book. http://tools.seobook.com/general/keyword/

You need to find which keywords relate to your topic and which ones are worth targetting due to the number of searches.

Once you've found your keyword/words you need to optimise your page with that word. Include it in the following places, title, keyword and description metas, H1/H2 tags, bold/italic text, body text, alt tags.

When building links to that page also use your keyword in the anchor text. Be sure to vary it a little to make sure the linking looks natural though.

Having your keyword in the URL is useful as well, and using an aged domain, especially using that specific keyword.

When you put your keywords in your URL does it matter how you do it? For example, which one of these would be better:

    1. atlantamoonwalkrentals.com
    2. atlanta-moonwalk-rentals.com
    3. atlanta_moonwalk_rentals.com

does Google see & rank all 3 of these the same?

You will need to use your keyword in the Title tag once. The title tag is very important and Google pays a lot of attention to it. I have noticed that when I use the exact keyword in my title tag, that page tends to do well, even with minimum link building. Secondly the keywords must be used in the body of the page as well. I am inclined to use a keyword density of not more than 1-2% but some people use higher keyword density as well. But more than the keyword density, it is the way they are placed that matter. The use of keywords must look natural. And finally intelligent use of your keyword as anchor text can do wonders to your SER.
