Does anyone know if you email something like a press release to multiple recipients at the same organization, will it get seen as SPAM? I'm planning to use Campaign Monitor to press release my list, and I assume all the emails will all be sent at the same time. I'm worried some of them might get blocked as SPAM if the same email is sent to multiple recipients from the same organization at the same time.
Send the email to yourself and BCC to all the people on the list? I've done that before and it has worked fine. Maybe some other DPers could shed some additional light.
You need to ensure that your "sender reputation" is good. You would only be treated as a spammer, if you behave like one - namely, hitting AOL with 5,000 emails to non-existent addresses is a good way of getting blocked. Hitting them with 3 unknown addresses wont be a problem though. Check your sender score here: https://www.senderscore.org/ For reference, we send some 50,000 emails a day without any problems at all - but they are all to opt-in subscribers and we are ruthless in pruning our mailing list of dead addresses.
Press releases are for journalists. I'm not a journalist and if I got sent a press release on email I would mark it as spam... why would someone send me a press release?
Why do you think the sender would send you a press release if they didn't think you would be interested in it?
A content site is comparable to a newspaper. Aren't we all a bit like journalists? We aren't called 'publishers' for nothing you know. That said: I wish some people would think a bit more before sending me stuff. E-mails need to have clear titles so I know whether there is a reason for me to open it. The content should be summarized in the title.
I think it comes down to the reputation point mentioned earlier. If a product is a scam/fad or lacks much foundation, then it's owner would probably have less of a problem sending spammy emails to market it). But, hopefully if you're in business to promote a product that you believe can help people and can be viable, then sending spam should be your biggest fear. I know it scares me, as someone who is launching several web ventures this year. The last thing I want to do is send an email to someone who would have never even wanted it...
I think there is always going to be a group of people who didn't want the mail you sent them. That goes with the territory of promoting something through e-mail, unless of course you have people sign up for a newsletter or something (which is what I personally do).
Why would you be sending it to multiple recipients with the same organization anyway?? If you're doing your job right, you'd narrow it down to the single, best editor or beat journalist for your story, and pitch it to them directly. You don't send them to multiple people at one publication at one time. If the first doesn't bite, and there's another beat it might fall into well, you can try the other editor/writer... just not at once.
