    Do you have a list?
Or did you just scrape some emails?
If you have a list of emails from users who have willingly given them to you, you might want to consider awerber.
If you don't, well then you might as well forget it. Inboxing is very hard nowadays...

Here are a few tips which I hope would help you.
(It would be great if you could give us some more background about your campaign, your goals, your product etc. so we can tailor our advice to your needs).

1.You must use an Autoresponder and not your personal email account if you're serious about marketing. I would recommend Getresponse. It is reliable and has a high response rate. They offer other services such as video messages and surveys. It's not free though, it's $18 for a list of 0-500 but well worth it.
    2.
I would create a dedicated email address for the campaign purpose, preferably not a commercial email such as Gmail or Yahoo as they have a cap of the number of outgoing emails. Using your domain based email such as is a better idea. Although you don't go to your email account and send those emails away, your autoresponder does so you still need to provide a valid email.
3.If you have no writing skills or experience you better use quality content which is proven to work. A good place to start is with PLR articles. Private Label Rights packages are bundles of articles, autoresponder messages and more that you buy and have the right to use as your own. You can find quality stuff over @ PLRWholeseller and @ Tim Bekker's Development Platform. There's a wide range of subjects to choose from. You can modify the text to your likings of course.

4.Plain text with wrapped lines works best and is proven to work in all email clients, rather than HTML based email which might not get through sometimes.
5.Don't just try to sell your list straight away, but rather establish a relationship with them, gain their trust, send them useful links, and establish yourself as an authority in your field. Don't send any sales message prior to the 7th email. Please don't use over-hyped subject lines like: "{First Name}, You've made a sale!!!" and "Re: I need your Paypal address". "7 steps to Internet Marketing success" would work better. Do your research on headlines that sell as that's what will make or break your campaign - you need to get them to open your mail first!!!
6.Always end the email with your name. Example: "Talk soon,
    Your name."
7.Actually if you are targeting the Internet Marketing audience you don't need first names. Those people are tired of giving their names out and getting emails with {First Name} on the top. Just dive straight to the message.
8.Encourage your subscribers to interact with you by replying your mail, by Social Media, by commenting on your blog, sending you a support ticket and whichever way you can. They will appreciate that and will trust you more as they know you are a real person and not just a bot sending copy paste messages. Include a link for them to unsubscribe if they want to.
9.Send the messages every day on the first week, then every 3 days for a week, then every 4 days and on then every 5 days. Most people don't buy at the first time so this method proves effective.
    10.No spamming!!!

    Good luck...

Mass emails is not a bad idea. Send only to those who have responded to your email advertising. Otherwise there is the problem of spamming.

Email marketing means use of email in marketing communications. In its broadest sense, term covers each email you ever send to customer, possible customer or public venue. Sending emails designed to encourage customer loyalty and enhance the customer relationship. Placing your marketing messages or advertisements in emails sent by other people.

phplist is no doubt a great tool... But I have seen at the end when they ask for payment, you don't have any option to run away :)
