Email Marketing Tools Question

I've done some email marketing in the past and on a few occaisions it was very successfull (IMO). I was using OEMPRO - which seemed to work well except it was on a loaded server and was to slow to deal with when using a laege database.

I have also used Advanved Mass Sender and that works great but the downside is that it doesn't handle html emails with images in it (it sends the email as an attachment) and thats not good.

I am about to buy Atomic Bulk Mail Sender which seems like short money. I'm looking for those that have already "done this and or are doing it" to advise me on what they use and if my current choice might be a good one.

    Thanks in advance.

I am using oemPro for more than 2 years and quite happy with it. I tried several other solutions such as SendStudio, 12All, Mail-Manager-Pro, and some a few free solutions. oemPro was the only solution which provides all features I need. Addition to this, company support service is quite excellent.

If you are looking for a free solution, check phplist, but I still suggest you oemPro.

The two best web-based solutions that 've seen are Bronto and Constant Contacts.

    Hi Matt,

As far as I know, they are fee based services hosted on other servers. I would also recommend CampaignMonitor.com if you are looking for a hosted solution.

But if you are looking for an application which will run on your *own* server, then oemPro is the definite solution.

The benefits of a hosted solution is that it won't cause any problems with your host. I know the larger hosted email solutions are very tough on spam emails as their IPs are whitelisted with ISPs, you won't get that when sending from your own server.

actually you will have that problem - because if you rent a server someplace and start emailing from it with something like oempro then your server will get shut down as soon as the host receives a spam complaint weather that be real of not....

Yes, you can get whitelisted on your own and no you won't get shut down for a reasonable level of complaints if you have a good relationship with your uptream providers and if you follow the rules. Some of the RBLs are still cowboys, but they're much less important due to that fact and most large ISPs and mail hosts (AOL, Earthlink, Outblaze, Hotmail, YAHOO) score mostly independently of them because of it - along with taking into account feedback from large operations like Spamcop of course. Incidentally, AOL is, counterintuitively, the easiest of all the major ISPs to work with and get whitelisted with (as well as establish a feedback loops with, SCOMP SCOMP SCOMP, heh), but to get whitelisted you need a sending history on a server that looks pretty clean. And to get a clean history you have to be mailing clean. If you're mailing people who have actually signed up with you then it really shouldn't be a big problem. The biggest problem in terms of deliverability comes from dealing with YAHOO, GMail and Hotmail who run pretty strict and adaptive filters that catch a lot of stuff and who don't really work with email marketers at a smaller level. Just on a personal level I pretty regularly end up with emails from smaller employment sites in my bulk folder because they use a lot of the same language that the filters expect from spam email.

As for costs and solutions, I like SendStudio for a guerilla effort. You can get a pretty good sending rate out of it without opting for a custom MTA like Ironport (or other, cheaper but quite good products) and it's highly customizable. It's cheap as Hell (I forget exactly, like $120 maybe?) and your rental and bandwidth on a server won't be too much on top of it unless you're really pushing a ton of mail out the door. Then again, if you're not going to be mailing in the five figure plus range regularly then you can probably get away with something smaller. Really, it seems to me like an enterprise level solution is overkill for any list that isn't in the hundreds of thousands (or more, obviously), but if you want reliability, good deliverability data and plenty of options and you don't want to hand your list over to an ESP then it's the best way to go. It's a little tough to tell what size list you're looking at managing though, so if you could be more specific I could try to offer a better answer (to the best of my ability anyway).

Unfortunately there's kind of a giant void between the several thousand range and the hundred thousand plus range that's basically a black hole for non-managed solutions. I'm not suggesting avoiding managed solutions, mind you, but I've generally been involved with in-house efforts for a variety of reasons (not the least of which is that it's nice to have control of your own data).
