Is Email marketing just Spam with a cool new name?

I've seen some pretty reputable companys offering email marketing services lately. But I thought email marketing was just a nice way of saying spam.

Is there a difference between the two?

    Spam ins unsolicited.

Depending on how you do email marketing, the user have to opt-in or double opt-in. So they asked for the 'ads' or newsletter.

Email marketing actually only send email to person that request for the email. If you send the email to whole world, then it is call email spamming

Once you build your own list using an opt-in page you can send to them using a broadcast whenever you like. These people opted in to receive your emails, this is a very good way of marketing as you can get to these customers multiple times.

Yes there is a huge different between them.
Email marketing is sending email to a opt in list subscriber who have agreed to received email about certain product.
While spam is just send email to untargeted recipient and it a illegal act

spam in email marketing meaning you are just sending email without getting any permission..
the best practice of email marketing basically internet marketer with use opt-in or double opt-in on landing page / squezee page..
concerning about company providing email marketing service, you have to investigate where they got email prospects..
sometime they are using software like bossmailer (this is spam software that catch emails from anywhere)..
so, be careful when you want to use their service..make sure they got the emails properly..
    :)

It depends on how it's being used of course.

When I hear "email marketing" I think about spam.
But then again when I hear about blogging I think about spam too :D

Yes, it's spam. Everytime I get an email with some advertisements, I just delete it. And report it as spam.

Email marketing done correctly would be very beneficial and a recent study proved that email marketing is still better than social networking sites' marketing. People still buy after reading mails, and if email marketing was not working then why do all these people still send out so much spam.

If you are sending same email over and over then you can call it spam.

I understand everyone's responses but it still seems like if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck then its probably a duck.
