Email complaint...very weird one

I just got the strangest email a second ago from one of my directory contact forms.

Bought software? I don't sell, have never sold software. And if he is talking about purchasing directory listings, we both should have paypal receipts emailed to us. He says full payment was released to my company. I have no unaccounted for paypal receipts, as EVERY receipt includes site information (such as url) and gets listed promptly. He seems to think I'm Canadian. I'm not and certainly nowhere on the site in question (UnaDir) do I claim to be. A simple whois would tell him I'm not Canadian. Either this guy is very confused or some Canadian scammed him selling software using my contact information. I hope he's just seriously confused.

It sounds like a communication breakdown between him and his engineer. I'd bet his engineer has had problems, told him, only he has misheard the info or something and contacted you in error. Is your site similar sounding to something else out on the web?

Just explain to him that he must have made a mistake and that should be the end of it :)

I sent him a reply stating that I do not sell software, only directory listings....and if it's directory listings that are the issue to email me back with site information and paypal information and I would promptly get things straightened out. But I have a feeling this guy is searching for a Canadian software seller.

Yeh...people can be funny. I sell nutritional supplements, but I once got a call from someone who insisted that they saw garage door openers for sale on my website. :D

I thought it may be some kind of scam as well, but couldn't see how. I await the response. If it is something crazy I will certainly share with the forum (along with this guy's email and company name) to give everyone a heads up on any scammy activity.

By the way, the first email was in fact filled out on the contact form on my website, so I know the first email I got wasn't some sort of mass-email campaign.

Me too...scammers don't have to send direct email...they can fill out your form, and use your server to send their spam :)

i say it's scam... they send 1 email to you without any sign of the scam first... then lead you on in the subsequent emails... i'm also just guessing... but it'd be wise to be careful...

    An update guys.

The email was sent to me at 12:30pm yesterday. I promptly relied to the email around 1:00pm politely asking for more information about his problem and have never gotten a response. It's been 24 hours so if it was a legitimate complaint regarding any business of mine, I would think he would responded right away to get things squared away. I am leaning toward the "It's a scam" theory.

    Now and then.
I believe it is some sort of scam. Don't know what kind, as I never reply to them.
It is always software they say they bought, even from my sites that sell nothing.
I have also received a variation on this email where they say to refund their paypal purchase or they will report me to paypal.
I just forward to paypal and let them be aware of this.
So far, no one has reported me for not refunding their non-existent purchase.

I never answer these types of emails, just delete them.

Thanks for the info, dawg. I really wasn't too concerned with this fella contacting PayPal. After all, both PayPal and myself know he never paid for anything. However, I may report him if a second email comes back asking for some kind of paypal refund.

I had a form on my website. When I looked at my logs I felt it was being used for who knows what. I quickly removed.
