    Hi Sharon,

I believe yahoo runs a pay per use SMS service (I havent tired it), or you can always sign up with SMS gateway companies.

I use www.messagenet.com.au , obviously you would want to sign up with a providor in your own country/network.

I use SMS notifications when a recieve an order from my e-store, I have friends that use it to notify them of particular system events etc..

It is a great tool to use if you are into e-commerce, and works out to be fairly cheap too, compared to hiring someone to give you a call when s@#t hits the fan.

Most sms gateways will set you up with an account like which will direct an sms to your mobile phone when an email is sent to it.

I pay around 25c per SMS for 100 sms credits, but it gets cheaper if you sign up for a monthly subscription.

PS: you can find free sms gateways or some ISPs will also have this as an add-on service, just remember you get what you pay for.

I recieve my sms roughly 5-10secconds after the email is sent, however for your free services, there is usually a long lag anywhere from 30min to 6 hours!

The best way is if your service provider provides a free email2sms gateway. If not, you can install some software and hook it up to an old cellphone - check open source Kannel.org, and Visualgsm.com.
