Effectively Buying Internet Advertising

I run a blog about consumer issues and finance, and think that I've gotten about as much traction as I'm going to get from free advertising methods... We're at the point where we can start to afford to purchase internet advertising, but I have no idea where to go with it. It seems there are so many different options, many of which would be hard to tell how effective they are...

You already know about adsense. So, go with that avenue.

You should consider trying them as an experiment to see how good your site really is in selling. If it is, then start advertising on other sites that has visitors who may like what you have.

For the most part, it's just a matter of putting in as many ads in as many sites as you can afford.

I'm sure you haven't exhausted all the methods of free advertising available to ya, but your niche would seem pretty difficult to advertise, so I understand where you are coming from.

I would try purchasing a test amount of advertising from Google AdWords, they're usually a good start. Check out the ROI and see if the whole paid advertising thing is worth it. If you're getting the conversions you need, then buy more advertising.

Usually I don't recommend paying for blog advertising. A blog is a blog. Unless you run a high-profile blog like JohnChow.com, people will most likely not be interested, and a lot of the people dragged in through paid advertising will think there's some sort of scam behind your site, or that your desperate for traffic.

The best and cheapest way to advertise a blog is simply content. Build up a lot of high quality, unique content and Google spiders will eat you up. Visit your competition's blog and post in their comments with a link to your own blog (don't be rude about it though). Maybe write a really good article and submit it to Digg/Reddit and hit their homepage, and you'll be set. Submit your site to StumbleUpon. Heck, start posting in DP forums more and place a link in your signature and you'll get a few hits for free from here too.
