Effect on SEO of hyphenated domain names : Positive or Otherwise?

I read that hyphenated domain names are great for SEO, so few of my blogger.com blogs, I used hyphens on the sub-domains. But when my friend found out about it, he said "what was I thinking"? He said hyphens make my blogger.com domain names looking cheap and amateurish and does not have any good effect at all on SEO. Is this true?

If you can't get the exact match domain, then get the hyphenated version.

I have been wondering about this myself but till now the answers I get varies, some are even contradicting. I would say that hyphenated domain names is easier for the eye, but for SEO it is still a good question mark.

It's good for SEO because the hyphen acts as a separator.

Yes, that's what I read. Hyphens act as separators, and so the words are more distinguishable and therefore better for SEO.
