    Hello everyone

I am little confused, if you could please help me? I have a website say http://www.abc.com, and it is ranking in top 10 results of Google for its keyword. Now I have made some changes in the site. And when the site, i used redirection for its home page. So now when you type http://www.abc.com, it redirects you to a new location http://www.abc.com/main/index.aspx. I want to know that will this change have any effect on search engine ranking? And will search Engine consider it spamming?

Please suggest me what should i do?

It may affect your rankings. Why not just leave it as it is?

One of the most important things from both a users and search engines point of view is to have the homepage of your site as www.yoursite.com and make sure all the links point at the homepage from every page of the site. Why confuse things?

U can use a 301 redirection. Anyway you will loose your ranking to a certain extent.

The redirects that are common are:

    202 OK

    301 Moved permanently

    302 Temporary redirect

    404 Page not found

so if u r usinf 301 redierction then it is okie... otherwise i think since u r sending it to same page then it is okie.. well i wld also think tht it is gud tht u redirected otherwise u wil have 2 different pages with similar content n then there r chances of duplication of content even... this is in my opinion... tht u shld hv only one page wheather direct outside or inside a folder but hav only one page..

another thing.. it is always better to have the home page with www.domainname.com rather than www.domainname.com/html/index.html (though the same page), from both user as well as crawler point of view as it doesnot create any confusion.. but otherwise permanent redirection doesnt have much effect on the PR n other things... :)

301 should do the job. But you will probably lose the ranking at the SERP, at least for a while.

Thanks to you guys i have now decided not to change the address of my home page. I don't want to see decline in my site's ranking. Thank you all for your kind suggestions.

it will surely effect your ranking to the google. if you had used any java script for redirection then google will consider your page as blank. if you did via any php code or 301 .htaccess redirection then only it will crawl your redirected page.
