Effect Of Duplicate Title Tags And Duplicate Meta Descriptions?

I just noticed that Google Webmaster Tools is saying that I have duplicate title tags and duplicate meta descriptions on two pages (/) and (/home.html). I originally thought that because I had changed some wording in my H1 and H2 tags that my site disappeared from Google's search results but now I am thinking that because of these duplicate tags that my site has been penalized. The site still shows up #1 when I search using site: and when I search using the domain name.

I have corrected the duplicate tags. If this is indeed the problem--how long before my site will retain its ranking?

    Thanks,
    Yeto

Hopefully when Google re-indexes your site they will realize that you corrected the problem and that should reflect it both in search results and in Google Webmaster Tools.

    It's probably neither.

It is routine now that a site disappear from the index, then re-appear in a few days or a few weeks.

It's the new dance. Been happening for a year or so, yet people have not caught on to it.

We are still thinking that every change in SERPs is directly tied to an action that we took.
(Possibly some quality, high PR links would stabilize it, see sig)

Here is another example of this way of thinking: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1724365

In any case, good luck, hope it comes back soon.
