    Ammoun - the simple answer is supply-demand. EDUs are very rare and currently can only be registered by accredited universities. However, there is a small number of grandfathered EDUs (those registered prior to 2001), which don't have that restriction and can be used in any way.

    The rarity of EDUs is also driven by the fact that schools are allowed only 1 EDU (yes, even Harvard unless it managed to register > 1 before 2001), and so there are no "spare" domains. On top of that, EDU domains may not be bought / sold directly, only via organizational transfer. Thus, the only way for someone to get hold of EDU domain is to purchase an existing, bankrupt or never fully launched university. By general estimates, there are no more than 3-5 cases like this per year.
