.EDU Domain Name

I have tried searching these forums for a thread related to my question, and I have also tried searching on Google - but ultimately, to no avail.

So, my question is:
How do you get a .EDU domain name?

.edu is exclusive for private or public higher institution. Except than that I don't see you getting to own a .edu domain. Interesting sale though see this one
