Thank you for sharing this, it is a creative idea. (creativity often makes success)

However it is not good to have you link on a page that also links to sites you would not want to be associated with. It will get a bad link profile. Google is smart. Think of it like real life, guilt by association. If you were a reputable business person in real life, but you were see hanging around a bunch of gangs and drug dealers. How long would your reputation last? Not long.

Google can tell the same thing online, if you hang around to many of those "unfavorable" links they can hurt you.

    Just my two cents.

I went to it, firstly I do not know how to post as I am not an admitted International student, it isn't right to post there in the first place. Secondly the poor forum is spammed till it is nearly rotten. I do not wish to see my links among that. Much as I would love to have a backlink from an edu, I feel it just isn't right.

    LOL

Its a bad idea to post your link there. Even if Google doesn't penalize you for it you wont get much benefit since your link will be lost amongst 100s of spam links that are added every day

.edu link backs are the best you could get. .edu's tend to have the highest domain age and are seen as authorities. .edus where the first tlds.

I totally agree, of course if you find an edu site for eg blog which you can offer good comments and link yourself up, by all means. But if you are there just to post some useless comments for your link, I think this isn't very nice. I don't think you will like it if others spam your blogs/forums too.
