Edu and gov backlinks...what's the deal?

    Hi All,

I've read of the importance of .edu and .gov backlinks. However, is there a clear roadmap to getting these links, other than pay $400.00+ for 2 to 12 of these links?

Is getting these types of links - without paying the above fees - a possibility...or just a pipe dream? What's the deal?

I thank you for your input and look forward to your opinion and guidance.

    Right, heres the deal.

.gov and .edu backlinks are treated equal to regular backlinks, but the reasons why people value them more is because they generally have high pageranks and they are also visited by Google a lot more.

    Incase you didn't know.

used to be that a lot of weight was placed on edu and gov sites, and i think gov sites should certainly still be that way. chances of spammers getting a hold of edu and gov domains are a lot lower than .com ones.

matt cutts is the last guy on earth you wanna take advice from, all what he can say is Blablabla, and give diplomatic responses without any real informations, the only way to discover if something is working or not is to test and experiment, with all my respect to everyone who posted in this thread 99% are just repeating what they have read somewhere in the web or on forums,(most probably never got any gov or edu links before) but infact, from my experience and i have seen this happen so many time, genuine EDU or GOV links can make a big difference, and am not talking about spammy comments or forum member pages, links from an EDU or Gov resource or content page can have a huge impact on rankings.

Matt cut says that EDU and GOV are equal to any .com or net, but then he also tell you that edu and gov "generally"(= "always" in his dictionary) HOLD more trust and page rank than other tld's (the real page rank not the one u see on the toolbar), very diplomatic because he just don't want to admit directly that Edu's and Gov's are genuine links, people are not stupid 1 + 1 = 2, you can't say that 1 + 1 is may be 2; his comments about edu links reminds me of his comments about paid links, he say

    but then he also says
you can get nothing from this guy, just confusion and frustration.

    thx.

    Hi All,

Thank you for your input. The reason I was asking about this subject is that I noticed a website with 200 incoming links from local businesses, the BBB, and also .edu and .gov links. Of course, those links are not easily spammed. Another website, in the same category, has 1000's of general directory links, but has a lesser ranking.

Doesn't this mean that the .edu and .gov links are better?

Obviously there are better than the regular com/net back links, simply coz there harder to get, so anything hard to get has some greater value,

For an example take Gold, why is it soo valuable and expensive ? coz itz a limited and hard to find, same theory applies to gov and Edu links but no one really know's how google treat edu. and Gov links, but then again google is not the only SE out there

Even a website of a not well known .gov or .edu site will nearly always have a good pagerank, so a link from them is always worth it. However its not the domain that makes the difference its the pagerank.

Its not worth paying for a link though, you can get links that will give you the equivelant page rank for a much lower price, if not free. It just means you need more of them.

Yeah, I have always heard about the value of getting a link in a .gov/.edu website. Not sure about the best strategy in getting one though, for free that is.

i think google will ignore most of the backlinks you will find because (i think) you will find web sites which has tons of outgoing links and a bit spammy web sites. i think google is so clever and it will ignore most of the these types of the links.

the best one is adding great content to your web site . backlinks will find you:D

    or buy them;)
