Well a few days ago one of my stes got accepted into dmoz which i am very happy about since the site is already doing very well. But what im not happy about is the editor who accepted the site sent me an email telling me its been accepted and to add a link back to his site in the kind of tone that if i didnt add the link he will remove the listing. i didnt add a link back and wont i wont say my site or his or which category etc but just thought i would share my experiance - Corey
Maybe you should contact dmoz sent them that email with all the information they need to verify who is the editor.
Yea, definitly contact DMOZ with a fwded email of that one you got, and let the editor know that he is trying to extort a link out of you and thats not cool. If you get kicked out of DMOZ for this than do you really want to be there in the first place? I wonder how many link backs this guy has gotten doing this? Could you check the other sites in the catefory and see if he is trying to mooch off of everyone?
Heh... one could watch the directory dumps, then mass mail all new submissions. it's a brilliant way to get unethical, one-way, backlinks (lol) Though I do agree, report it. If it is an actual editor, then they should be canned. Adding in Digital Point member sites is grounds for favoritism anyway
Are you sure this is e-mail from real DMOZ editor? While I was editor I received few such spam e-mails from directories which were using DMOZ database (does it comes with webmasters e-mails???) saying that since they have listed my website in there crap directory (which itself was buried deep into there website with zero PR) I must place backlink to there crap website in few weeks or they will remove me! I've even made a post about these jerks in internal forums and wouldn't be surprised if these are the same idiots pulling the same scam. If not and this is real editor you should post his e-mail here so we can all have fun. (Ivan the Evil)
Thats a good point! They may not actually be an editor and are just trying to run a scam. I hve had email from some DMOZ clones thanking me for the payment 12 months ago for the listing and asking for another 12 month subscription
Asking money? Darn why I didn't think of that, I could have set up dozens of clones and made millions. On the serious side how many people fell for it? There should be some kind of warning on DMOZ website about this kind of scam.
If a DMOZ clone has 5 million sites and they email all of them and 0.1% of them fall for the scam and agree to pay, $30, then you could make $150 000 !!!! I am sure DMOZ knows about it, but I assume there is little they can do to stop it.
So when do we start? How much does a full clone website takes? I can afford few dedicated servers for start... With amount of bribing attempts, I doubt it... maybe I should add it to wiki article?
Unbelievable, that is really sad! Good thing you didn't post a site, because it is not necessary his site...maybe he is framing someone But still, those things happening at DMOZ are very, very sad.
well i just sent an abuse report this guy is definantly the editor same real name and usernames as his site
If you don't want to tell us his name at lest tell us if he is some bigshot with many categories and awards or nobody with few worthless categories buried deep in DMOZ.
We might ask martty or copperdrum for this. Oh wait their banned My goodness. Why o Why o Why ? Duplicate Account.
