Editing vertical menu bar to collapse before use

    I'm trying to edit a vertical menu (which I got from dynamic drive) and I've attached the file so that people are able to view what I've done.

    When I click on the slashdotmenu.html file (the first time), the menu items are already expanded and I do not know how to have them contracted before using it. Once I contract them and open up the file again, only then does it keep opening with the menu items contracted.

    What I would prefer to happen is that when the webpage is opened, the links are already collapsed so that the user has the option of opening a selected link when they want and collapsing it when finished.

    Can anyone help as I am unable to figure this out myself?
