Editing page source (e.g. index.html) has no effect

I am new to web servers, though I have done a fair amount of web development. I installed Apache 2.2 on my fully patched XP desktop, and it seemed to go OK. When I directed a browser to 'localhost' I got the "It works!" page.

So far, so good. I edit index.html and the changes are faithfully displayed when the page is refreshed. :)

But, I can edit PHP pages all day, and the changes are not reflected in what is displayed, even upon an Apache restart, or a full reboot. :( The PHP pages are basic login and query on a local MySQL database. I have inserted basic echo commands and other simple debugging type lines with no effect.

If anyone has an idea, it would help because I am stumped and have had no luck searching for this kind of problem in various forums.

I should have mentioned that PHP is installed, and works. It's just that I don't see the results of edits. Maybe some kind of caching I'm not used to is going on, I don't know... like I said, I am stuck!
