Editing for DMOZ- what's the incentive?

I'm trying to figure this out, because it seems like a weakness in the model to me. So you have a bunch of people who want to edit just so they can get their website included in the directory. What's their motivation to keep up with the submissions once they've posted their website? Seems like the activity would drop off from there. And for the people who do it out of good will- sure I can understand volunteering for a cause that you believe in, but then your committment tends to be sporadic. You fill in when you can. I can't imagine logging in on a regular basis to sift through goodness knows how many submissions (it becomes a job), when I'm not getting paid to do it. Especially when you consider that the resource is becoming less and less relevant in light of search engines and other resources.

DMOZ is a dated concept.. it can and should and probably is so easily replaced by using new Web 2.0 community based submission model. Lets take Stumbleupon for example... I would consider that the new DMOZ... or create a 'directory' just like DMOZ, but have it so that people need to review it and comment on it X amount of times before voila, it gets a dofollow link and maybe nice little happy face icon... you get the idea. :)

DMOZ was built on a more of a defunct soviet communist model of governance where you have village soviets, regional soviets, and supreme soviet. That went out of fashion in the 90s and today is all about community. :)
