Editing Descriptions Submitted a Must!

Discussion in 'Directories' started by vicdigi, Dec 7, 2007.

Is it important to edit desciptions that are submitted to your directory!

How many of you, who are serious about your directories take the time out to edit the description to ensure all entries remain high quality?

At Webmaster World Forums, an excellent reason for editing desciptions was given by OldWelshGuy which we entirely agree with.

The importance of editing, the reason we gave above but also, to keep your directory's content different from all other directories.

Oftentimes, and we have been guilty of this ourselves, many people submit there website with the same description time and time again - At this stage, when do you think Google will see your directory as having duplicate content and then dump it to the side?

I agree. It's especially import with directories that often don't have on-the-page content for Google to spider. So they must get the index description form the meta-tag.

100% of all regular listings at 36Towns have unique descriptions written by our editors. Editing descriptions is a must.

Agreed, that is why I always take the time to edit descriptions and make it sound something like I would write.

I'm not sure who installed categs ads, however:
in file: categs_ads.tpl there's a typo bug in line:
{if $CATEGS_ADS_COOUNT < $CATEGS_CONFIG.ADS_MAX_NUMBER}
Code (markup):
Should be:
{if $CATEGS_ADS_COUNT < $CATEGS_CONFIG.ADS_MAX_NUMBER}
Code (markup):
This prevents to submit over max ads number.

Maybe some submitters don't like their descriptions or title to be changed.

Under the circumstances, maybe those submitters would also be happy as they would be getting into a directory that is well looked after and, where the directory owner goes to great lengths to promote the directory itself.

I always edit the description on each submission, mainly due to the "duplicate content" factor, however rewriting the descriptions to something better benefits for the submitter, you and your visitors, as it gives them a better look of the listing.

I always prefer it. It means the page is not going to be duplicate content, even if search engines tighten up their duplicate content filters in future.

Agreed, from an SEO point of view and depending on what content is already on the page the website is submitted to, a dedicated webmaster and directory owner has to do what is necessary.

This is for the benefit of all parties.

No matter who.... could be me too. No one is perfect. :)
However it's ok to inform end users about bugs and how to correct it I think.

Good luck!

I also edit descriptions. If you don't, you have duplicate content issues.
