    Hello,
For a new online shop that I'm about to open, can anyone tell me what's the difference (if any) between a regular web hosting and an eCommerce hosting?

I'm not sure if its relevant or not but we are building our own system.

    Thanks.

Friend there are many differences between regular web hosting and Ecommerce web hosting.
For a ecommerce base site you need very high levels of security and don't hosting your site on a common web server, host it to a dedicated IP.
Please check your ecommerce host support PayPal integration, Google checkout, and payment gateway for Credit/Debit cards.

I think this is informative to you.

there is no difference in ecommerce hosting i think they provide payment solutions but i had suggest you to go with regular hosting and signup for 3rd party payment processor.

The difference is typically the amount of resources that you are provided as well as the level of access you get.

For example, if you are running Magento it is almost impossible to run on a Godaddy shared account and can not be installed on a Rackspace site cloud account at all. If you do set it up on a Godaddy account you will not have root level access to the server to configure any type of additional compression or server side caching you will need for it to run smoothly.

This is where the definition of eCommerce Hosting should come into play. An eCommerce solution will allow you dedicated resources on a dedicated machine (usually VPS) to work with. You will typically get root level access, and frequently the machine has already been configured with additional compression, monitoring, security, etc.

I say should only because like most things that are not government regulated these days, many hosts will use the term eCommerce Hosting but still provide a standard installation with no upgrades. So it is best to do your research before paying more.
