    Hi

    My wife (AmyNelson) has been posting here for a while and has recommended this great site to me as we both maintain many sites. I thought i'd introduce myself and start benefiting from people's advice here. You may have guessed that i'm a *nix guy from the subject of this post ;)

    Now perhaps I should execute hello.c:
    ./a.out
    (excuse my bad sense of humour)

    Hello *nix guy. I started my computer life as a Mac guy. Switched to OS/2 Warp. Switched to Widnows NT. Switched to XP Pro. But, keep 2/3rds of my computers on Fedora. I even ran Linux before there were distros and stopped using it because of frustration getting available graphics libs to work in the pre-desktop era. I used to dream, about writing mouse drivers which worked properly and even creating my own operating system.

    DP draws people from all over the computersphere.

    Welcome. I am certain you will learn much here and that you will enjoy the friendly atmosphere.

    Poor Amith! lol.

    @Gareth, Solaris?? By choice...? Fortunately, I don't have to go anywhere near it now! And when I did... well, sometimes with very little choice and other times as a favour for former work colleagues.

    I have Solaris running on an old Ultra 10 sitting under my desk right now, I rarely use it and pretty much keep it around for being able to say "I have Solaris". It used to be my main desktop before I upgraded to a PC running FreeBSD.

    Allow me to explain:

    echo whatever >hello.c puts "whatever" into the file hello.c
    in this case the "whatever" is a small C program on one line:
    int main() {
    printf("hello digital point\n");
    }
    in this case, one that says "hello digital point"
    cc then compiles it

    By default, probably for historical reasons, the C compiler spits out an executable named a.out, so the new program is executed using:
    ./a.out
