i started writing an ebook on business credit as thats what i know
this was long before i even thought about this afilliate marketing thing
    i am 98% done
i also got a guy that i met in my meetup group here in houston to help me with the AM part since thats what he does for a living

i am wondering if getting a piece of software or one of those services to protect from copying and so on is worth it and if any of you guys used any

    if so
which one have u used and what do you recommend?

Have used eBookGold and it works great, and you get a long list of PINS for free that can be used to activate eBook when your customer downloads it. I don't use it anymore, as it only works on a Windows environment.

Nowadays I just stick to using the basic security features in Adobe when you save your eBook. I always disable copy / edit on my eBooks.

It's great software, but you are tied to their site. The biggest reason why I don't use it anymore, is that it creates the eBook as an exe file. Hence, wont run on Mac's. So you need an alternative for Mac users.

Best bet is to focus on the marketing, and don't worry too much about being ripped off. Better use of your energy.

When you create your Word document, you can save it as a pdf file. Just use the security options given at the time then. That's enough for me.

Yes, just put anti-copy security on it. I can do this in Open Office.

If someone is determined they can copy it. You don't want to go crazy on security because it will lead to increased customer support requirements and even refunds.

Your book is not IM so it won't be subject to mass copying anyway. Just don't worry about it.

Some people use DLGuard for their download pages. I used to but I see another database as another point of failure and a hacking hole. I just use a regular HTML download page and put noindex meta tags in it. If a few people find it, so what.

Just need to do a google search every now and again and if you find it, get the host e.g. rapidshare, to take it down.

Don't worry about security of ebook too much, its the least of your concerns really.

    Hope this helps.

The biggest threat to your business is mainly from people that will rip off your content and sell it as an ebook themselves-so you need to mention quite clearly in your ebook that your content isn't for resale. Just slap a copyright and legal warning or whatever (do consult a lawyer first) and you can rest easy because the percentage of people that will share it amongst friends will do so anyway, and it's not like they're going to pay for more copies, and no one can really do anything about it. And like rolf said, you should take care that your product page doesn't get indexed or it could cause quite a bit of damage.
