eBay - unrealistic listings

So many auctions on eBay have massive and inflated prices that no one is ever going to bid on.

Is it just for SE purposes? Or publicity? Just curious as I've never really got my head around it.

One example in the Sites For Sale forum:
    http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=353222

3-400 uniques per day, fairly turnkey script, and he's asking $19k.

Similar to domains that go up for millions when they are worth about $10.

Sellers on ebay try to take advantage of the people who are new in this field and are getting into websites and so on.

I don't think that can be it. Granted, selling a $10/free turnkey site on there for $200 ... maybe.

But selling things like domains, eg: theannanicolememorialsite.com, for $1,000,000, isn't going to trick anyone, surely?

I hear ya, no clue why they do it. I think it's hacked accounts. Onetime my account got hacked I logged in and "I" had bid on like 20 items totalling 98,000,000$!!! I"m not sure what the point of that is but I'm sure some schemer somewhere has some kinda plans.

I've often wondered that of 'ordinary' items going for $7K...for a cheeto in the shape of the letter K???

in this case though it might be a little of both, publicity and pr preying on the whims or naive nature of others.

if you are referring to the domains, ie: annanicolesmithneverhadababy.com, then that is simply stupid people trying to get better SE and PR for the domain name which in the future will be used for MFA sites.

I think they do it just for publicity. To get people to do what where doing and thats talking about it. Then maybe people click over to other items there selling that are correctly priced. Or maybe end up going to a web address there promoting somewhere in the listing.

It could also be money laundering, I saw a fishing reel worth about £20 sell for £150 recently, only had one bidder!

I also think it's mainly people trying it on to see if they can hook someone who doesn't know any better - or maybe even in some cases it's just that the seller isn't realistic and doesn't know the true value of what they are trying to sell.

£150 for a fishing reel - crazy!! Then again, I hate fishing :)
