eBay to enter web advertising market
    Monday, 12 June 2006
Online auction house eBay is about to enter the web advertising market space with a new context sensitive system for affiliate website publishers. The system will work in a similar fashion to Google AdSense, which recognises keywords on a web page and serves up ads linking to websites that are relevant to the content... more..

What I'm wondering is this. Will you be allowed to run both on the same page? It will be interesting to see how Google responds to this...

Well, I haven't seen a peek at what they will look like yet, but if they are confusingly similar to Google Ads, I'd say it won't be ok.....

It's relavant ads. I saw a few weeks ago. I don't think google allow to have on the same page with adsense.

That's good news for me as I am now officially an ex-Adsense publisher. It'll have huge appeal and i'll definitely give it a try.

    What's the likely timescale?

I was excited at first to see this, but then I noticed it is only context ads to Buy It Now items on ebay. This is OK I guess, but it is not Adsense or AdCenter or YPN by any stretch. It's a very weak version of it.

I agree that this is not the same, but in many ways, I think that this is a stronger proposition. If you have followed AdSense ads (by visiting the advertisers), I find that a large number of them are MFA. Some are very shameless MFAs, while others are more sophisticated. In the case of a BIN ebay item, the end objective is a real financial transaction. So, I think that this offering by eBay makes a lot of sense.

I am not in a position to say how deep the MFA problem runs, but if it runs deep, the eBay BINCON (that is what I have decided to call it -- Buy It Now CONtextual ads) :) makes sense.

If it takes out all the ways Google massage things, such as Smart Pricing and all the rest of the tweaks and adjustments that affect people's earnings then it should be good. The Paypal integration should also ensure swift and regular payment too.

I guess they can hardly give any competition to adsense. EBay is the biggest client of google adwords..

So now I can have such topical ads on my site like ... "Buy North Carolina at Ebay", "Tom Smith for sale at Ebay", "Get your own B-52 on Ebay".

    Oh goody.
