Experts here are encouraging us to eat more kangaroo. EATING kangaroo meat instead of beef will help lower Australia's greenhouse emissions by reducing the numbers of methane-belching cows, a study says. The University of New South Wales research suggests a 20 per cent cut in beef production from 1990 levels, the equivalent of 15 million tonnes of methane. "Beef production is chosen in this measure because it is responsible for the biggest share of livestock-related methane emissions," says the report, Paths to a Low Carbon Future. "This measure could be accomplished by shifting to kangaroo meat and/or lower-meat diets." Author Mark Diesendorf, of the university's sustainability centre, admits achieving such a cut in beef production would be politically challenging. The recommendation comes under a scenario of measures to reduce the nation's emissions by 30 per cent by 2020. Has anyone else tasted it? It's not bad roasted. Stronger flavour. What would be your substitute meat?
It is probably much more expensive to breed and raise kangaroo per pound than beef. Which is why the transition probably will not take place.
Not really. The supermarket chains already stock Kangaroo meat in Australia and there is currently too many kangaroos (they are actually culling them to keep the population under control).
It's way too strong in flavour for me I prefer stuff like chicken or fish - but instead of beef? Don't think it's a problem price -wise, i think it's pretty comparable
The average kangaroo will weigh upwards of around 150-200 pounds. The average full grown cow can weight over 1,400 pounds. That means that kangaroo mass is about 10% of cow mass, on average. If you were a farmer, which one would you want to raise? A herd of cow, or a pack of kangaroo? That was the point I was getting at... and from what I've read, it seems the majority of kangaroo meat is consumed in restaurants. Meaning, it isn't mainstream. That would seem to backup my hypothesis.
Tried it before - tastes like chewy lamb. And if you can get it outside Australia, I'll be interested
It would be a hop, skip and a jump to kangaroo for me They make fantastic steaks with a hot chilli sauce.
It's all the same, in a hamburger you won't even taste the difference. I've tasted crocodile before and to be honest it looks like fish and tastes like chicken. Everything tastes like chicken....
I'm vegetarian I know a few people that have had kangaroo - they said it was like venison or buffalo. I guess brumbies will be next on the menu.
I'm not so crazy to eat such food. Guys, it's better to go to the nice restaurant, for example Italian, and eat carpacco. Fantastic!
Kangaroo meat sound delicious, so bad there are not available to buy/eat here. I have tried many thing and sure i would love to try kangaroo too.
