It always depends, if your competition is very low (like 500-900 monthly searches) then you can outrank your competitors by finding an EMD domain and building a good backlinks on it.
Just because there's 500-900 monthly searches doesn't mean shit... you'll struggle to get 1% of that traffic anyway... I have over 10 million impressions in Google a month and only one or two percent actually visit your site... besides that the amount of competition is not determined by the number of searches per month - your post is irrelevant.
