I thought the easiest way to check your PR was to use the Google Toolbar, but I could be wrong..

I think you're 100% right. But.... here comes the but. How to predict your pr before toolbar export? I think that all the available tools are worthless. When the pr update starts, you don't have to predict anything, 'cause you can see different data centers. Looking in the Google directory is probably the best tool available for seeing the update pr before the toolbar export has taken place.

The google PR toolbar is not the right PR that your page has. I think if google is still updating right now, the true PR is not as the one you seen in the toolbar.

Google updates pr to a specific point in time , which is always a month or so behind. For that matter, the current update covers the period ending around July 01 or 02. Thus, when you see the results of that update in the toolbar your visible pr will be actually out of date. Google will never show you your true PR up to date, because you could manipulate the algo. You would start experimenting and see results of those experiments almost in real time. Then, you would figure out what works and what doesn't. For this reason all those claiming that pr is updated on daily basis in the algo disseminate misinformation (Matt C. leading the gang).
