ok so say im targeting one keyphrase that on average gets 4000 searches per month. How hard would it be to list in the top 10 on google?

Well, how much competition is there for the keyword? That is quite important to know.

With only 4,000 searches a month, it's generally pretty easy to rank in the top 10.

But again, it all depends on the keyword. Usually commercial keywords like "Buy 'keyword'" or "Cheap 'Keyword'" are pretty competitive despite how many searches it gets per month.

The number of searches per month is irrelevant. Even the amount of competition for that phrase is largely irrelevant. How well the competition is optimised for your term is what counts. An 'allinanchor:keyphrase' search will give you an idea of who is going for that term and where you currently sit in the pecking order.

the niche has 1,190,000. The first page has no keyword phrases for the .com name. One website has part of the keyword phrase in it though.

IMO :anchor is a keyword used link to you site.
such as : seo service
,there "seo" is called anchor.

Nah, you will be able to get within the top 10 position if you build good related links, personally, if you are interested in the website (mabe a hobby etc) then go for it :D it just takes time.

One million means nothing. Again, it's how well optimised the first page is that counts. The allinanchor tells you which sites have the most inbound links with the phrase you want as the anchor text. Remember the (in)famous 'miserable failure' search phrase (that brought up a certain politician)? That's the power of anchor text.

How did you check your allinanchor? Did you use quote marks? Go do a search on the following and see the differences with these examples:

allinanchor:digital point
allinanchor:"digital point"

Once you've run an allinanchor search using your phrase you can see the sites that attract inbound links for your phrase (either naturally or by design). You can also look at their other on-page SEO factors such as domain name, titles etc. to get an idea of what you're up against.

Good luck,

Phlegm...

I'm going to agree that a million is just relative. It's all about the competition. For instance, I do regional niche SEO work and I have two clients that have roughly the same amount of returns for their keyword phrase.

1. Seattle Computer Repair
2. Seattle Credit Repair

That's not the correct region, but the rest of the phrase is correct. Each has around 1.2 Million in google. For the first one, I was able to get in top 5 in google in less than a month. For the second, it's been three months and we've only just now broken in the top 50. And I've told them, it's going to take at least another 6-12 months to break into top 10. The competition is MUCH fiercer. You could have results of 500, but if the top 20 are really well optimized then you're going to have a much harder time ranking well.

HTH,

MR

hmm, I see now my other website got listed on the first page of google in a few weeks and it has 810,000 competetiors. So 810k even isnt a hard goal to reach.
