I think the Chinese needs logistics like transportation and rescue equipment far more than money. With their strong economy and massive surpluses, I really doubt they need food and medicine. Though I am more than willing to donate if the need arises. I am really impressed with the lightning speed which the Chinese tried rescuing its own citizens.
You don't have to be rich, even donating a cent will do as long as it is within your means and you are sincere in helping.
I have already donated. I know how terrible earthquakes are, we had a 8.1 richter one here in Lima - Peru, last year. One of the most frightening moments of my life.
